👧 Introduction

My name is "Uttama Surve 👧" daughter of "Mr. Aniruddha Surve".

I am a "15-Year-old Indian girl", a student, and the "Coordinator of the Uttama Child Protection Awareness Program & Protection Organization".

I am writing this blog to share my views on a serious social issue — "Child Marriage". Although India has progressed in education, technology, and law, child marriage still exists in many parts of our country. This harmful practice affects children’s education, physical health, mental well-being, and overall future.

As a student and a child protection coordinator, I feel it is my responsibility to raise awareness and encourage society to understand that childhood must be protected. Through this blog, I aim to explain the causes, effects, and legal provisions related to child marriage and motivate people to take action against it.

📌 Understanding Child Marriage

Child marriage refers to the marriage of a boy or a girl "below the legally permitted age".

According to Indian law:

• Legal age for marriage of a "girl is 18 years"

•  Legal age for marriage of a "boy is 21 years"

Any marriage below this age is "illegal" and a violation of child rights.

 ❓ Why Does Child Marriage Still Happen?

Child marriage continues due to several social and economic reasons such as:

• Poverty and financial insecurity.
•  Lack of education and awareness.
•  Social pressure and fear of tradition.
• Gender discrimination.
• Misunderstanding of laws.

Many families believe early marriage provides security, but in reality, it creates lifelong difficulties for children.

💔 Impact of Child Marriage on Children

•  Schooling is interrupted or completely stopped.
• Dreams and career goals are destroyed.
• Financial dependence increases.

 🩺 Health & Emotional Impact

•  Early pregnancy risks.
• Physical and mental health problems.
• Emotional stress and anxiety.
• Increased risk of domestic violence.

A child is not physically or emotionally ready for marriage.

⚖️ Laws & Legal Provisions Against Child Marriage in India

India has strong laws to prevent and punish child marriage.

📜 Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 (PCMA)

This is the "main law" related to child marriage in India.

• Declares child marriage "illegal"
• Allows authorities to "prevent, stop, or cancel" child marriages
• Protects the "rights and safety of children"

📌 Important Sections:

🔹 Section 9

Punishment for an adult male marrying a child:

• Imprisonment up to "2 years"
• Fine up to "₹1 lakh"
• Or both

🔹 Section 10

Punishment for anyone who "performs, conducts, or helps" in a child marriage (including priests, relatives, or mediators).

🔹 Section 11

Punishment for "parents or guardians" who promote, permit, or fail to stop child marriage.

📜 Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015

• Child marriage is treated as a form of "child abuse and neglect"

• Children affected are considered "children in need of care and protection"

•  The "Child Welfare Committee (CWC)" can take immediate action

📜 Indian Penal Code (IPC) – Related Provisions

"IPC Section 375 (Protection of minors)"

  Marriage does not justify harm to a minor girl.

"IPC Section 498A"

  Protects women from cruelty and harassment after marriage.

🌱 Role of Society and Youth

Ending child marriage is not only the government’s duty; society must also act.

We can:

* Raise awareness in communities

* Speak openly against harmful traditions

* Support children and families
