Protecting Children: A Vital Necessity for Their Rights

Hello everyone! 

I am Uttama Surve, a 14-year-old coordinator of the "Uttama Child Protection Awareness Program and Protection Organization." Today, I want to discuss a very important topic -A Vital Necessity for Their Rights This is an issue that affects millions of children worldwide, and it is not just my responsibility, but all of ours, to ensure the safety and well-being of every child.

I take pride in the fact that my dad, Aniruddha Surve, who is a dedicated PLV (Para-Legal Volunteer), supports me in this important work. His guidance and support empower me to achieve my goals. Together, we are dedicated to creating a safe and happy environment where all children have the opportunity to fulfill their dreams.

The Importance of Child Protection :-

Protecting children is fundamental to ensuring their rights to live, grow, and thrive. Children are the future of our society, and they deserve a safe and supportive environment to develop into healthy, educated, and empowered adults. Unfortunately, many children around the world, especially in India, face significant risks to their safety and well-being. These risks include poor health, lack of access to education, exploitation, and potential abuse. 

In India, where approximately 19% of the world's children reside, the numbers are staggering. Out of nearly 440 million children, about 170 million are at risk or currently facing precarious situations. This encompasses issues such as child labor, trafficking, child marriage, and various forms of violence. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that these children are not left behind and that their rights are protected.

The Impact of Child Marriage :-

One of the most pressing issues in child protection is child marriage. This practice affects girls disproportionately, robbing them of their childhood and exposing them to myriad dangers. Statistics show that girls married before the age of 18 face much higher risks during pregnancy and childbirth. They are more likely to experience complications, and many do not survive the process. 

Moreover, early marriage significantly curtails educational opportunities. When a girl becomes a wife and mother at a young age, her chances of continuing her education diminish dramatically. Without education, these young women are trapped in a cycle of poverty and dependency, impacting the health and education of their own children as well. Research indicates that children born to young mothers are often malnourished, suffer from poor health, and are more likely to die at a young age.

By protecting children from harmful practices like child marriage, we not only safeguard their rights but also empower them to fulfill their potential. Educating communities about the consequences of child marriage and promoting the value of education for girls is a crucial step in breaking this cycle.

Child Protection in India :-

The Indian government has recognized the importance of child protection and has made commitments at both national and international levels. Various laws are in place to create a protective framework for children, including.

• Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Amendment Act, 2021 :- This act aims to provide a supportive environment for children in conflict with the law, ensuring they are treated with dignity and care.

  

• Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 :- This law prohibits the marriage of children below the age of 18 for girls and 21 for boys, aiming to eradicate child marriage.

  

• Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 :- This legislation provides a robust legal framework for the protection of children from sexual offenses and aims to ensure the dignity and safety of every child.

These laws represent significant progress in creating a safer environment for children in India. However, legislation alone is not enough; implementation and community engagement are critical in ensuring that these laws function effectively.

Mission Vatsalya :-

To enhance child protection initiatives, the Government of India has launched Mission Vatsalya This initiative serves as a comprehensive framework aimed at providing care, protection, and development for children living in vulnerable and disadvantaged situations. It brings together various existing child protection schemes and introduces new programs designed to tackle the unique challenges faced by marginalized groups of children.

Mission Vatsalya operates at multiple levels, coordinating efforts across national, state, and local levels to ensure effective child protection. It works closely with various departments, agencies, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to create a concerted approach to safeguarding children. The initiative focuses on strengthening community services, enhancing access to education, and promoting the overall well-being of children.

 A Call to Action

As a young advocate for child protection, I believe it is essential for each one of us to raise our voices for our rights and the rights of our peers. The more we talk about these issues, the more awareness we can generate.

This powerful statement embodies the essence of what we must strive for. When children are informed about their rights, they can advocate for themselves and others affected by abuse, exploitation, and neglect.
